Marc Misses the Mark

I'm a huge Marc Jacobs fan. I mean, ginormous! So I was surprised to be so disappointed in his new shoe collection. Oxfords that look like they were designed for my grandma? Flats that look like mice? What are we, 4 or 94?

What say you? I'd rather spend $250 on something chic.

Why do we care so much about Mrs. Obama's pearls?

In the last three days alone, I've read half a dozen articles about politician's wives' or women politicians' sense of style. Why do we scrutinize Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi and comment on, say, their legs or their beautiful pearls more than their political views, but never talk about Bush's tie or Obama's shoes?

Style mavens know that first--and second--impressions count. A First Lady--and lady politicians--will always come under scrutiny from the fashion press. That's the way it goes. With campaign season in full swing, we pick apart every hemline, every string of pearls, every inch of fabric, looking for clues to the woman behind the fashion.

"Everyone knows that people respond to the way you look when you run for office," André Leon Talley, an editor-at-large for Vogue told the International Herald Tribune. "A black Camelot moment is the right moment for the Obamas," he added. "And so the faux pearls, the A-line dresses, the Jackie flip are obviously all part of how her image strategy has evolved."

An article in the Boston Hearld entitled "Hail to the Chic: Cindy or Michelle?" says that Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain exude a confidence and flair not seen in national politics for a long time.

“They’re total fashionistas,” said Susan Mullins, president of BackBay-based image consulting firm Susan Style. She praised both women for dressing stylishly, yet age-appropriately. Fashion criticisms of the two women are minor, said Mullins, who wishes both women were less TV camera-concerned about wearing prints. And while both love pearls, Mullins wishes Obama would “spice it up a bit.”

“I love her Wilma pearls,” she said, referencing her oversized ones reminiscent of “The Flintstones” character. “But my suggestion is doubling them up.”

Ginger Burr of Total Image Consultants in Lynn agreed about Obama’s conservative jewelry choices. “Michelle has the opportunity to have a little more fun, be a little more adventurous,” she said.

Burr said Obama’s bolder belt statements - “they’re not wimpy, they definitely have substance”--make her look comfortable in what she’s wearing.

“It makes her approachable,” she said.

Seems when it comes to politics, clothes--and pearls--really do make the (wo)man.

Try on Some Color, Man!

Black...bo-ring! Brown is the new black? Not any more. Grey? Ho hum. Beige? Oh please.

Style disciples, here's your assignment for today: Make like Reese and Renee and add some color to your wardrobe. We're not talking about blush pink and lavender, girls, I mean BOLD. Lipstick reds, gemstone blues and emerald greens. Choose at least one bold piece and work it into your wardrobe. I dare ya.

Frustrated Internet Shopper

It's not that I can't find what I want (see Frye women's Reese T-strap, left), it's that I can't find someone to sell them to me. Sure, Zappos.com is great; it's my go-to shoe site, and my second is Piperlime, but Zappos doesn't have my size and Piperlime doesn't have this style. Even the manufacturer, Frye, isn't sure they have the shoes in stock. (I have a call in to verify.) A Google/Yahoo search of "Frye Reese T-strap" returns a bunch of shopping comparison sites, plus Zappos and one other site that only has size 9. Ugh. I guess I won't get these shoes, but I do have a new appreciation for the stores that actually do have the desired merchandise in stock.

How to Organize Your Closet

It's the New Year! You know what that means? The holidays are over and you can start buying presents for you! But, hold your horses...before you splurge on a new cashmere sweater, Joe's jeans or pearl necklace, you must first organize your closet. After all, how do you know what you need when you can't see what you have?

Here are tips from Linda Rothschild, founder of Cross It Off Your List, a personal organizing service in, of course, NYC, as told to Allure.

Perk it up. First, paint your dingy closet interior a light color so that dark clothes are visible. Then, make sure the closet is well-lit. According to Rothschild, every closet should have a strip of fluorescent lights above the door; in a walk-in, the light should be in the center of the ceiling.

Be brutal. Rothschild's rule is, if you know you're not going to wear it again, let it go. Lose anything that is stained or doesn't fit. After the first round of edits, go back and do it again. Ditch most things you're keeping for sentimental reasons (not grandma's wedding dress, but you know what we mean).

Hang out. Uniformity is key, says Rothschild. Buy matching hangers so your clothes hang at the same height. Velvet hangers, which look gorgeous, have the added advantage of keeping silk and spaghetti straps from sliding off. Group categories of clothes together: sleeveless tops, dresses, short skirts, long skirts, and so on.

Cover lots of ground. The space under your shortest pieces is valuable real estate, says Rothschild. For shoe storage, use cubbies or clear, stackable drawers, which are easy to open. Put out-of-season clothes, boxes of memorabilia, etc. in the highest space of your closet. Organize it all in clear, stackable boxes with labels so you can see what's there when you need it.

Three Dots is Online!

Have you heard of Three Dots, the clothing store whose designs are based on "great fabrics, inspired design, fastidious construction and the perfect fit?" I first discovered Three Dots on the pages of Shape, but, as the company is California-based and I'm in Connecticut, the only way I could shop for the funky, relaxed and oh-so-stylish duds was to wait until my annual trip to San Francisco to visit my BFF.

Opening up my mail today, I was thrilled to discover Three Dots now has an e-commerce site! Check 'em out at http://shop.threedots.com/. Co-founded by Sharon Lebon in 1995 in California, the company began with three styles, three sizes, and twelve colors. Two of my favorites from the store are the long sleeve vee-neck tee ($78) and the long-sleeve British tee ($85).
(As Blogger's photo uploader isn't working at the moment, you'll have to visit Three Dots' store to check the merch out for yourself.)

Hoops are hot!

Agonizing over what to get the hard-to-shop-for women on your list? As a jewelry buyer, I'm often asked what's hot. The easy answer this year: hoops.

Hoop earrings are everywhere, and they're extremely popular for holiday 2007, according to Modern Jeweler. For the conservative career gal, small, diamond or pearl-studded hoops are the way to go. For the glamour gal--think J.Lo--big, dramatic hoops are in style. Two I like:

Tiffany Atlas diamond hoops, $3500 http://www.tiffany.com/.

Trendy Color to Wear Now

Rich rusts are in for fall...good news for most women, who can wear the color with ease. To get the look, try a head to toe ensemble in apricot or curry...think a vivid orange dress or skinny jeans and a turtleneck, or add a hint of spice with an orange suede belt or apricot patent leather bag.

Orange not your thing? Try a splash of sass with carnelian jewelry, like these oversize hoops from MoonRiverPearls.com. Or go to my other favorite site, Zappos.com, and pick up some cute orange ankle booties.

Frustrating!

This month's issue of W magazine has a compelling headline: Diamonds, Rubies and Pearls to Die For! I was going to check out the spread and report on my favorite pieces, but, guess what? I couldn't find the article after five long minutes of trying.

Why, why why must magazines spread their table of contents over several pages and then bury them randomly throughout the first 5o or so pages of the issue?

I'll tell you why, to force you to look at the ads.

I'd spend a lot more time reading the magazine if I could actually find what I was looking for. As it turned out, I got so frustrated, I tossed the entire thing in the bin.

Save on Makeup

Think you have to spend big bucks at the Macy's counter to get quality makeup? Not necessarily. Foundation? Sure, spend the cash. You need to match your skin tone, and you just can't do it with the supermarket brands. Some lotions are worth the dough, too, especially if you have problem skin. But eyeliner? My sources tell me that most eye pencils, no matter what the brand, are manufactured at the same plant in Germany. Whether this is true or not I'm not sure, but I do know my 99 cent Wet & Wild eyeliner is every bit as good as my $12.50 Clinique pencil. So pick up a few eyeliners at the grocery store for a few dollars, and put the rest into your Creme de la Mer savings plan.
