Is Brown Still the New Black?

Brown isn't the new black, according to Modern Jeweler. Instead, each color is holding its own. "With black and white stronger than ever and the trend for chocolate pearls and diamonds also continuing, it’s not surprising that a combination of the two trends is popular," says the mag. "Black keeps brown sharp and urban. Brown warms up black, making it more flattering on skin. Designs that pair black and brown help marry all the jewelry in the fashionable woman’s wardrobe. And like a black and brown handbag, black and brown pieces will work with both sides of a woman’s closet."

Get the trend: Earrings with champagne diamonds in black rhodium 18k gold and chocolate South Sea cultured pearls from the “Gossamer” collection by Mark Silverstein Imagines, suggested retail $3,700, (800) 993-5900.

Pearl Basics

A step down from a diamond, at least in the hierarchy of the court, a pearl is the queen of gems. Some cultures highly value them. Historians speculate that one reason Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 B.C. was to get his hands on freshwater pearls. They were popular jewels before 1892, when Mikimoto Kokichi, a Japanese pearl farmer, invented the cultured pearl, inserting semi-globular mother-of-pearl beads into pearl oysters and inducing them to form half pearls around the beads. Natural or cultured, pearls by the 20th century were both glamorous and fun. Flappers wore long ropes of them and Coco Chanel used them in her clothing designs. They're a little fussy though. They should be kept away from perfume and other chemicals. They should be cleaned annually and wiped with a soft cloth after wearing. So remember: When you're scouring the tub, wear your diamonds.--Leslie Earnest

PEARL BASICS
Types and sizes
  • Biwa: Forms in the freshwater of Lake Biwa, Japan
  • Blister: Attached to the inside of the shell as it grows
  • Freshwater: From mollusks, resembling puffed rice
  • Seed: Tiny, used in Victorian jewelry

Questions to ask

  • Does it have luster, an "inner light?" It should.
  • How is it shaped? Perfectly round is most valuable, though some prized pearls are very irregular.
  • Is the color evenly dispersed?
  • On a necklace, is the strand tightly strung? You want to see the pearls, not the knots between them.

Make Valentine's Day Good This Year

Ah, Valentine’s Day. Most men hate to shop for their beloved on February 14, due to lack of time and because there is just too much meaning placed on Valentine’s Day gifts. Did you know that most women loathe the holiday too? I know this because I’m one of them. Don’t get me wrong, I relish the idea of a romantic day where my husband and I can canoodle in front of our fireplace, sip wine and relax. But it never happens. Why? Oh, a few little things like jobs, children and our four dogs. My husband never has time to shop for me and he’s so picky that I hate shopping for him. Thus, we mutually agree to ignore the day, and the holiday flies by, leaving both of us a little disappointed.

I was surprised to find that we’re not alone. I figured most men consider the holiday a burden, but I didn’t know most women do too.

I do now.

If you believe the DeBeers’ and Kay’s commercials, you’d think all women had V-Day on their brains. The truth is far from it. Here’s what real women really think, from a straw poll I conducted in early February. Respondents asked to remain anonymous, for obvious reasons.

“I think Valentine’s Day is stupid. We don't usually do gifts, although I havegotten a few orchids that I then felt the pressure of having to keep alive…”

“I wouldn’t say that I hate Valentine’s Day, but I am indifferent. It’s cheesy. I would much prefer to be the recipient of some romantic gesture out of the blue…like January, for instance.”

“One year I got a card that said, ‘For Valentine’s, I got you this card to tell you how much you mean to me. Inside: what are you looking in here for?’ We didn’t make it to another Valentine’s.”
“It’s not a holiday that I love. My worst gift was a crappy white vase with a red carnation from my husband that I later found out he paid $32 for. I wanted to strangle both him and the local florist who robbed us of the $32.”

“It’s a Hallmark holiday. We possibly go out for dinner or I make an extra effort to be romantic. That’s it.”

“One year I got a crappy fruit basket. Fruit is not romantic. I really hate remembering that. Geez, why did you have to bring it up?”

“Valentine’s Day is good through first grade. That’s it!”

“I got a dozen roses that never opened and I found later that he paid $98 for them. I'll I could think of was what else I could have gotten for $98!”

Only one woman I talked to said she loves the holiday, but that’s because Valentine is her maiden name. “The holiday has a special meaning to us Valentines,” she said.

Her opinion doesn’t count.

Clearly, we need a Valentine’s Day intervention. Most everyone I know could benefit from a romantic day with their beloved. But how do we turn it around? How can men and women get through this romantic holiday gone bad?

Women can start by being honest with men about their expectations and what they’re really looking for. It’s not wrong to tell your boyfriend or husband you’d really love to receive a pair of pearl stud earrings or a gift certificate for a massage. He’ll probably thank you for eliminating the guesswork and the disappointment that comes with receiving a toaster. In turn, you can do something nice for him. How about cooking his favorite meal? Getting tickets for his favorite team? Even rubbing his back or organizing his closet will show you care. It’s not like he gets that kind of attention from you anymore, if we’re totally honest.

Men: Nix delivery of the tired, overdone dozen red roses or knee-jerk box of candy. What will resonate with women (and be fairly easy for you):

Take her to the spot where you had your first date. Feed her a delicious meal.
Buy tickets to her favorite show. Stick them inside a romantic card and write a little something special—and specific—about why you love her.

Give her something personal and thoughtful (and beautifully wrapped; we love that stuff) such as a pearl necklace if she’s got a June birthday (the pearl is June’s birthstone) or opal stud earrings if she’s an October girl. She’ll be thrilled you even knew to personalize the gift by choosing her birthstone. If you want a more classic, wearable piece of jewelry, there are many affordable, beautiful and high-quality freshwater pearls out there. You can even order pearl jewelry online. Many companies offer free shipping, free returns and elegant gift wrapping. All you have to do is point and click for two minutes and wait for the gift to arrive.

Finally, how about just taking the kids out for a night so she can relax? Or doing something thoughtful like detailing her car, washing her dog or cooking dinner together while you share a nice bottle of wine?

Together we can put back a little romance into February 14!

The Diamond Journey Pendant

Am I the only one who thinks the diamond 'journey' pendant is stupid? Seems smarmy to me, like the triple-stone 'past, present, future' ring. But it could just be me, since the journey pendant is one of the hottest-selling items according to Modern Jeweler.
Personally I'd rather have a pearl pendant or pearl studs...something classic and timeless, not popular and trendy.

Vermeer's Pearls

From Timothy Brook’s Vermeer’s Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World (Bloomsbury, $27.95), comes some interesting pearl trivia. Did you know that in no fewer than eight of his pictures, Vermeer paints women wearing pearl earrings? He also paints on the pearls shapes and outlines hinting at the contours of the rooms the women inhabit. Brook writes, "No pearl is more striking than the one in the Girl with the Pearl Earring (the painting pictured at left). On the surface of that large pearl...we see reflected her collar, her turban, the window that illuminates her off to the left, and, indistinctly, the room where she sits. Look closely at one of Vermeer’s pearls, and his ghostly studio floats into view."

Cindy McCain's Pearls

I know that talking about candidates' wives's style is a bit like talking about football player's uniforms, but since I love pearls I had to comment. Last night, while watching coverage of the primaries, I couldn't help but notice Cindy McCain's pearls. Yeah, there are other interesting things to write about her, such as how she was a rodeo queen, overcame drug addiction, or how she serves as chair of her family's huge corporation. But they don't belong in a pearl blog, so spare me. I want to talk about her style, which is eye-poppingly gorgeous. I especially love the triple strand white pearl necklace, pictured with the electric blue suit, and the gobstopper-size white pearl necklace, pictured with the black dress, that she wore to recent events. I've know www.moonriverpearls.com, www.americanpearl.com and www.bluenile.com have similar styles...I think I'll go shopping while I mull over who I'm going to vote for.

Designer Jewelry at Target!

If you have a thing for pearl jewelry and other fine pieces, you'll love designer Dominique Cohen’s jewelry collection for Target. Craftsmanship and innovation are the mainstays of Cohen’s luxury jewelry line--but they carry a luxury pricetag as well. (A pair of Cohen's gold hoop earrings sells for $1400 at Saks). Like Isaac Mizrahi's clothing line for Target, Cohen's jewelry line is wonderfully affordable. I didn't see any piece over $50, although they're wonderfully rich looking--like something you stole from grandma. Check out the multi-ring faux pearl drop earrings in grey (left). For under 20 bucks, they're yours!

Spring Jewelry Styles: What's Hot for 2008

Now that the holidays are officially over, and the days are getting longer, it’s time to turn your focus from shopping for other people to shopping for yourself. Late winter is the perfect time to revitalize your wardrobe and get ready for spring. The big question on every fashion-forward gal’s mind: What trends are hot this season? Last year, it was all about fussy fabrics and flouncy details, which made it hard to wear bold jewelry, which couldn’t compete. This year, all the pomp has been relegated to the back of the fashion closet, and style gurus, including me, are calling for clean, classic lines with little or no fuss. (Pictured: aventurine hoops, http://www.moonriverpearls.com/)

For jewelry lovers, this spring’s sleek fashion forecast is welcome news: The minimalist styles we’re seeing all over the hottest designer runways and in top fashion magazines’ spring fashion previews are the perfect blank canvases on which to showcase our most spectacular jewelry. Now is the time to add a few fun jewelry pieces to your collection and dust off pieces that have been in hiding in your jewelry box waiting for their time to shine.

As Clairee Belcher, Olympia Dukakis’s character in Steel Magnolias said, “The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.” Indeed. Without further ado, here are my top six jewelry looks for spring 2008, along with the celebs who love them.

The pendant necklace. Like a charm bracelet, a pendant necklace is the perfect accessory if you’re looking for something to personalize. Take a chain or cord, and add anything that will give the world a glimpse of your personal style. Whether it’s a pretty stone in your favorite color, a teardrop-shaped pearl or an item that means something to you such as your grandmother’s wedding ring, a peace symbol, locket, heart or other lucky talisman, you can thread it on a chain and make it the focal piece of your ensemble. Wear the necklace long if you want to draw the eye down and create the illusion of a longer neck, or shorter if you want to accent your face. Pair the pendant necklace with an open-necked oxford, a simple dress or a vee-neck top. Jennifer Aniston has long been a fan of the pendant necklace, which is a perfect accessory for her boho vibe. For a super modern take, do like Jessica Simpson does and display your pendant on a leather cord rather than a chain.

Layered necklaces. After several seasons in the spotlight, the layered necklace look is still going strong. Dare we say the style might even become a classic? It’s certainly interesting, giving the eye a lot to take in, and, because it’s versatile and the combinations are endless, it works well with many different types of necklines. To pull off the look, pair a shorter, 16- or 18-inch necklace with a much longer chain—or three. For added contrast, choose different thicknesses, metals or materials. For instance, pair a pearl pendant and a long, pearl-and-chain rope. So fun because it allows you to wear two or more of your favorite necklaces at once, the layered look is favored by fashion-forward celebs like Maria Menounos and Joy Bryant.

Dangle earrings. While I adore diamond or pearl studs for day, dangle earrings are all the rage this season—for both day and night. Cate Blanchett and Rihanna love the style, and who can forget the huge turquoise dangle earrings Marcia Cross wore to the Emmys? Those giant blue babies, by designer Lorraine Schwartz, were the talk of the awards show! That’s because dangle earrings are anything but subtle, adding punch to any hairstyle or outfit. Just make sure you don’t wear other jewelry that will compete. Let the dangles do the talking.

Interlocking Hoops. Because bare skin is in this season, it’s okay to forego wearing a necklace once in a while so that your earrings (and sleek, bare neck) can be the focus. Want to be in vogue? The hot earring style right now is the interlocking triple hoop. What it is: three hoops starting at your earlobe that gradually get bigger to form a triple hoop style that’s fun—think hoops—and sophisticated—think dangle. Gold hoops are especially popular right now, as are diamonds, if you can afford them, or CZs, if you’re on a budget. Jessica Alba and Uma Thurman have both been spotted with this sassy style, so you know the triple hoop earring is a trend worth emulating.

Oversize hoops. Like the layered chain look, oversize hoops are here to stay. Kate Bosworth, Alicia Keys, Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl are fans of the style, and it’s no wonder: Oversize hoops have an edgy feel that adds a funky, playful, urban vibe to an otherwise staid outfit. No wonder J.Lo and Jessica Alba rock the style so often. To make the style even more exciting, choose big hoops with dangling stones in a springy color, like green aventurine, or sterling silver hoops with peridot drops.

Cocktail rings. Cocktail rings pack a surprisingly big punch in a terrific little package! Draw attention to your hands (and look younger) by choosing unfussy rings with one big stone rather than stones with diamonds or other detailing. Choose rings made of bold, colorful materials like turquoise, onyx, mother-of-pearl or jade. Black pearls and oversize white pearls make great cocktail rings too. Trendsetters like Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Cameron Diaz and Catherine Zeta-Jones are all fans.

New Ways to Wear Pearl Jewelry

Today's pearl fashions are anything but your basic, boring take on pearls. Unless you're wearing a wedding dress, go for anything but a classic strand. Mixed media is hot in pearl fashions right now. Great for 2008: Seed pearls on organza fabric...leather and pearls...the rules have gone out the window.

More 2008 pearl fashion trips and trends:
  • layer necklaces of varying lengths and materials
  • choose black, lavender or pink pearls over traditional white
  • wear traditional, classic pearls with casual wear
  • thread an oversize cocktail ring on your pearl necklace, or tie the necklace in a knot
  • wrap a large necklace around your wrist for a cool cuff bracelet
  • choose oversize, mother-of-pearl beads instead of traditional 6-7mm pearls

Hoops are hot!

Agonizing over what to get the hard-to-shop-for women on your list? As a jewelry buyer, I'm often asked what's hot. The easy answer this year: hoops.

Hoop earrings are everywhere, and they're extremely popular for holiday 2007, according to Modern Jeweler. For the conservative career gal, small, diamond or pearl-studded hoops are the way to go. For the glamour gal--think J.Lo--big, dramatic hoops are in style. Two I like:
