Roots are not cute.
The message: Think twice before you go blonde. It's a time-consuming,
expensive and difficult shade to pull off. Even celebrities like
Jessica Simpson, Madonna and yes, Gwyneth Paltrow have difficulty
maintaining the look. Still want to try? If you were blonde as a child
and can afford the time and maintenance, including products, you might
be able to get by without looking like Ms. Spears on a bad hair day
(does she have good hair days any more?). Still with us? Cross your
fingers and take some tips from stylists and Marie Claire.
1. Keep cool when coloring at home. Choose 'golden' or 'honey' shades
if you're a do-it-yourselfer. Lightening warms up your hair; if you
choose a warm-hued dye, you could end up too orangey gold, says Julia
Youssef, executive director of L'Oreal Paris's Hair Color Techncial
Center.
2. Avoid alcohol. (Luckily, not the kind that goes yummily down your
tummy.) Bottle blonds must avoid hairspray, gel and mousse with high
amounts of alcohol. Check the label: too much of the stuff contributes
to dry, dull hair.
3. Don't go beyond the pale. White pieces sound appealing, but can
make you look tired. Instead, says Brad Johns, global color director
for Clairol, ask your colorist to create a golden base, then add
cooler highlights.
4. Know some maintenance tricks. To combat dark roots and hold off the
salon for a few weeks, apply dark, ash-blonde haircolor to your roots
with a toothbrush for about three minutes.
5. Go pro. If you need to go two shades away from your current hue,
get thee to a salon. It's worth the time and money to spare yourself
from looking like this, isn't it?
