A blue-eyed blonde, I don't look good in white. Which is great,
because after one wearing, my whites turn to gray or, even more
distressing, yellow. I don't get it. I thought bleach was supposed to
whiten and brighten, but even after pre-soaking for hours all I get is
a jaundiced yellow wash on my formerly white tee shirts.
I tried OxyClean or whatever the heck that powder is called, with the
same result. Even my dry cleaner yellowed my white pants (I know I'm
the nervous type, but I swear it wasn't me!) Let's face it: White
clothes, on top of being especially see-through...not to mention
magnetic to marinara and wing sauce, has a shelf-life of one wearing.
You might as well wear white, remove it, and let it live out its
retired life as an oil dipstick rag.
I read online to wash your clothes in the hottest water possible, then
let them dry in the sun. Hey, it bleached exactly half of my formerly
gorgeous Oriental carpet (the part not blocked by the door) so I guess
it could do the same for my tee shirts. I also read that Rit makes a
white dye. So you can just dye your clothes back to white every time
you wear them. Kind of gross to think of what you're covering up.
If any of you white-after-Labor Day-types have any suggestions, I'm
all ears. In the meantime, I'll stick to my staple: red. It looks good
on me and has the ability to turn my dreaded whites a pretty shade of
pink.
