When you MUST NOT wear white

Fri Oct 06 20:08:17 EDT 2006
Sure, I know, no white after Labor Day is a rule that everyone breaks
now, ho hum, old news. But there really is an occasion when white, and
off-white, is never appropriate. I get this question all the time and
here's the answer: You must NEVER EVER wear white to a wedding. White
is for the bride ONLY.

Leave the white to her.

If you're in a quandry, here are some tips on what to wear to a wedding:

Destination wedding: Wear a dress in a pastel or tropical shade and
dress comfortably, but don't wear flip flops (unless they're
bejeweled). Choose a lightweight fabric like linen and a style like a
long, breezy spaghetti-strapped sundress. Pair with a straw hat and
mod sunglasses.

Daytime: Keep it simple and traditional, like a knee-length, solid
dress and pearls. Save the sparkle for night.

Evening: Wear a beautiful cocktail dress and embellish with a bold
ring, bold necklace, or metallic clutch and shoes. A floor length gown
is too much; save that for...

Black tie: Go glamorous and dust off your highest stilettos and most
glizty jewels. A sleek updo is the hairstyle of choice. A floor-length
gown in a dark color will look super and appropriate, but don't wear
anything revealing or sheer. You're going for understated elegance,
not unwanted attention.
