A Jewelry Pop Quiz

Fri Oct 06 18:44:51 EDT 2006
Which would you rather have, a one-carat diamond engagement ring or a
five-carat diamond engagement ring? (I'm betting you're going with the
one that resembles an ice skating rink.)

Say the one-carat is IF (internally flawless), G (colorless) and set
in gorgeous platinum. The five-carat is all that and BIGGER. Still
going with the five, right?

The five is nearly $87,000, while the one is somewhere around $35,000.
Yup, we'll still take the five:

Beautiful, hmm?

Now, what if you found out the one-carat came from Tiffany & Co. (www.tiffany.com

), while the five-carat came from a warehouse at Costco
(www.costco.com)? Did your bubble burst?

I'm wondering how many of us would still choose the five-carat. Does
the name count as much as the product? Are five carats enough to
offset the fact that he probably bought new truck tires and a 50-lb.
bag of dog food while choosing a ring with which to ask for your
delicate hand?

If you would still choose the Costco ring, would you admit its
origins? And would you ever think to shop there for fine jewelry, or
am I being an incredible snob? (This all started as a conversation
between a male friend and me. You can probably guess which side I'm
on. I need ammo here...)
