Here's another common yet important question I get from customers on a
regular basis. In fact, I was e-mailed this exact query this weekend:
Q. My daughter turns 21 next month and I want to buy her a strand of
pearls. Which necklace length should I buy?
This is an excellent question as the most flattering choice today
(probably a 16 inch) won't be the best choice in a decade. Shorter
pearl strands look most flattering on young women, because the gems
draw attention to complexion. Older women can carry longer lengths,
which draw the eye down. Since a pearl necklace, treated with care,
will last a lifetime, it's definitely wise to consider future use.
Typically, pearl strands fall into the following categories:
Collar 12-13 inches
Choker 14-16 inches
Princess 17-19 inches
Matinee 20-24 inches
Opera 26-36 inches
Rope 40 inches and over
That said, the 18-inch length is your best bet for a 21-year-old. This
versatile length will look beautiful on a young woman and just as
wonderful when she's in her 40s and beyond. And classic pearls are a
beautiful choice: the traditional strand will carry her from college
graduation to job interviews, weddings and more. And she can someday
hand the jewelry down to her daughter.
