Fat is Holding Us Back

Fri Feb 16 12:53:22 EST 2007
As I sit here contemplating dieting and willpower, I am typing with
one hand and polishing off a double cheeseburger with the other.
Why is it so hard for women to lose weight? We know we will feel
better if we do, we know we'll be healthier, and we know our clothes
will look much sleeker, but still, the elusive weight loss goal fails
most of us every time. It's not because we don't know how; heck, even
my nine-year-old son knows what to eat and what to do to lose weight.
Rather, I think it's because it takes too darn long to see results,
and because food is soothing and delicious...and instantly gratifying.

What's a girl to do? For starters, change your mindset. If you vowed
that 2007 is the year you'll finally take off those last 10, 20 or 100
pounds, here are some secrets from Marie Claire magazine.

"Fear, doubt, negativity---those voices in your head that say, 'It's
too hard; I'm too fat' I'm too lazy' I'm too skinny' are keeping you
from the gym and the body you want," says Patricia Moreno, founder of
IntenSati.com, a fitness, lifestyle and weight-loss coaching company
in NYC. There's no way, for instance, that you'll do one more exercise
if your mind is telling you you can't. "In your workout, what you
believe is what happens."

During your workout, play a game with yourself: Try to crowd out
negative thoughts by replacing them with other ones--like why you're
there in the first place. "The biggest part of turning everything
around is connecting to your deep desire to do it," says Moreno. "When
you figure out what you really, really want and why you really want
it, the discipline required to get it becomes automatic. The art of
discipline is focusing on your goal and 'replacing the whiner with the
winner.'"

In real life, it goes like this: You're doing lunges because you long
for powerful legs. Resisting the exercise by thinking about how much
it burns is counterproductive. Instead, think, "This is torgure, but
it's a sign that things are changing." That's the joy of discipline--
and of getting your best body.

Now go lunge your way to Dairy Queen!
