Pearls for Men?

Tue Dec 26 13:38:58 EST 2006
I stumbled upon this article by Atah Victoria Mckhail today while
checking my post-holiday e-mails. While I'm not a fan of man jewelry,
man pearls might be cool. What do you think?
Special to The Globe and Mail: Hunting for the perfect engagement ring
at Birks, Declan Whyte, 37, stumbled on a rubber and pearl bracelet,
designed for men. It stopped him: "This is definitely something I'd
wear because it's so unique-looking. I've always thought of pearls as
being white, so just seeing a green-toned pearl is neat. I think
that's what makes it look more masculine, especially with the rubber."

Pearls are the latest fashion item men are pinching from women's
closets. And although they're being worn primarily as cufflinks or on
watch dials, some men are taking the plunge to necklaces and
bracelets. Birks is first off the mark to market single Tahitian
pearls set in rubber, targeted to male consumers.

"Tahitian circle pearls have become more fashionable than ever," says
Donna Battista, public-relations manager for Birks, "so the necklace
and the cufflinks are our best sellers."

And while it's hard to believe that a lot of men have pearls on their
wish lists this holiday season, that wouldn't be such a stretch of the
imagination for some. Perusing the collection at a Birks in Toronto,
Paul Beghetto, 29, liked how casual the pearl necklace looked on him.

"It's something you could wear every day," he says, "but I could
especially see myself wearing it to a beach in Mexico."

With an eye on the red carpet, Jayneoni Moore, a stylist based in New
York and Los Angeles, confirms that celebrities are no exception.
"Jamie Foxx, Jay-Z and Christian Slater have been spotted with pearl
cufflinks, so this is definitely big."
