Fell in love with a piece of estate jewelry and think the tagged price
is the number you're stuck with? Not so fast.
Before extracting your wallet, ask, "Is that the best you can do?"
Usually the salesperson will offer a lower price. Then counter, "And
what if I pay cash?" You'll end up walking away with your bauble for
(usually) far less than the sticker would have you believe. (One
editor at O magazine managed to snag a pair of gold Victorian earrings
for $150 less than the listed price.)
This works on other items besides jewelry, too. I've seen it in action
on wedding cakes and bathroom repair. Try it next time you're at a
flea market, vintage store or independent retailer and see for
yourself. One caveat: Don't try this at department stores; the
salespeople don't have the authority to bargain and you'll just end up
ticking them off.
Bargain down this vintage pearl and diamond ring.
