I think the owner of my gym is sick of seeing me talk more than I
lift, because he came over specifically to recommend I take his group
fitness class. Flattered by the personal attention, I told him I'd
check it out before turning back to my conversation about the Tom
Cruise/Katie Holmes' pregnancy.
Long story short, the next day I took BodyPump, an hourlong class
combining cardio and weight lifting. If you're looking for something
to shake up your boring cardio/weight routine, this might be the class
for you.
Using barbells with adjustable weights and a step, participants get a
total body weight workout that combines lunges, squats, presses, curls
and other gym basics with a fast enough pace to count as cardio. One
article I read estimated the BodyPump calorie burn for a woman in the
265/hour range. Not bad.
I was a tad sore the next few days, but nothing major. I have to admit
I did find the class a bit easy. I wasn't sweating much, and there
were quite a number of breaks while you adjusted your weights. Overall
I think the class is a good way to shake up your gym routine, but I
wouldn't count on it exclusively to whip you into pre-pregnancy
Jennifer Garner shape. Next time I'll pick heavier weights now that I
know what to expect and maybe I'll get better results.
The BodyPump craze is catching on, so you shouldn't have trouble
finding a class near you. If you can't, there's always that hour of
leg-cramping hell called Spinning.
