Buzz, buzz, buzz. King Kong buzz is all over the Internet, the radio,
the TV...everwhere I turn.
Since I love the movies, I decided to check it out. My opinion: It was
good, but not great.
The movie features Oscar-winner Naomi Watts as Anne Darrow, a down-and-
out vaudeville actress starving in the midst of the Great Depression.
Wandering the streets after her show has been shut down, she is
rescued by Carl Denham (Jack Black), a slimy filmmaker in the midst of
making an adventure picture who has just had his budget yanked by
dissatisfied backers. Denham convinces Darrow to join him on a ship
bound for Singapore, where, along with a crew and his unsuspecting
scriptwriter (Adrien Brody), he plans to film a mysterious place
called Skull Island.
This three-hours-plus movie is an epic on the scale of Jurassic Park
or Indiana Jones (non-stop-action). Made by Lord of the Rings director
Peter Jackson, the film's effects are amazingly life-like, and the
gorilla-meets-girl stuff is entertaining, but I have to say overall it
was a bit tedious. It took forever to meet Kong; there was too much
set up. Also the dinosaurs on the island were a little over the top.
Giant bugs? Check. Raptors? Uh, not so much.
I just saw The Family Stone too. I have to say, it was light and
predictable, but more my style in this harried holiday season. Three
hours is too long to sit for anything.
