Entry #2 In which the author, succumbing to the temptation of
chocolate after enduring 30 grueling minutes on the modern torture
device her trainer calls the StairMaster, decides it's far easier to
cover up fat than to lose it (more on that in future installments).
Yes, this is mainly a fashion blog, but to look good in your clothes
you must look good out of them. Beauty and fashion go hand in
manicured hand, after all.
Here's a little-known fact: the alabaster look only works for actual
stone statues and Nicole Kidman. And, no, big melanoma scars won't
land you on People's Most Beautiful list either. And don't get me
started on George Hamilton. Frying permanent wrinkles into your head
is not a solution. So, what's a girl to do? Self-tan, of course.
Been there, done that, you say? Wait! Yes, we've all tried fake bake
in the past and ended up with more orange stripes than Tony the Tiger
and an aroma that caused your boyfriend/husband/BFF/co-worker to
remark, "What is that toxic sludge-like smell? Did that chemical plant
get zoning approval after all?" But if you haven't tried the new crop
of lotions/self-tanners, you must! (Even girls not cursed with
complete and total blinding Arctic skin should try this, so you lucky
darker-skinned beauties, read on.)
The brilliance of these products is that the tanner is mixed into a
body lotion, so the result is goof-proof, streak-free and subtle. It's
your own skin tone, but kicked up a notch. (I love the new Olay body
Quench Radiance Reviver Body Lotion: Oil of Olay Website and my flaxen-
haired friend Brett swears by Jergens Natural Glow:Jergens Website.
While it takes a few days of daily applications to notice the color,
in the end you get a beautiful, radiant "tan" (Olay insists it's not a
tan, just a subtle enhancement of your natural tone and color. Po-tay-
toes, poh-tah-tos.) and no wildcat streaks. Okay, so you do end up
with a whisper of eau de self-tanner but it's a small price to pay.
Right after its introduction a few months ago, it was harder to track
down this stuff than an invitation to a Chanel sample sale, but now
it's available pretty much everywhere. (Brett says Jergens, after
being auctioned off on eBay, is now in every Target. And I got Olay at
my local supermarket.)
End result: I got a beautiful, golden glow with minimal effort (I
already moisturize every day, so why not use a lotion with self-
tanner) that provoked more than one envious, "So, what do you do when
you're not sitting at the pool?" comment. And Brett, who is the
fairest of them all, said, "This stuff works great!" Just remember to
apply SPF if you go outside. Glow girl!
