Has Customer Service Died Along With Chivalry?

Fri Oct 06 20:27:54 EDT 2006
After my horrible (ongoing) experience with Volkswagen and my new
Jetta, which has been repaired four times and is now on day 18 out of
26 in the shop, I was beginning to think that customer service had
died a slow death. But I work for a company (and it's not my first)
which prides itself on exceptional customer service--and really
delivers. So today I was happy to see that, although VW and countless
other companies miss the mark, some places DO care.

Case in point: I have two feature-length articles due tomorrow in
addition to my regular staggering caseload. My grass needs to be cut,
my laundry piles rival Mt. Everest and my dog said he'd walk himself
if I didn't get my butt in gear. So, like any girl with too much to do
and no clue where to begin, I decided to head to the salon. During my
mani/pedi/brow shaping, the wonderful Korean man who fixes things
around the salon, tidies up, and gives the occasional massage,
disappeared outside for a while. I assumed he'd gone for a lunch
break, and thought nothing of it.

Much to my delight, upon exiting the salon, I discovered he had WASHED
MY CAR! He and the owner smiled at me as I looked at them
incredulously. He'd gone out to wash the owner's Jeep and happened to
do my car too. This generous and unnecessary act has made me a life-
long customer, good for them as I get my nails done all the time, and
they are one of about 10 salons in the area. Good for me because my
faith in customer service has been restored.

Now, if only the car he washed wasn't my stupid dealer's loaner...
