The fashion world has taken a somber turn for fall, with solid blacks,
browns and greys replacing stripes, florals and polka dots. Beading,
crystals, rhinestones and other embellishments are also at a minimum
this season. Sober is in.
"There has been a general lessening of bling and overglitzed clothes,"
James Mischka, half of the design duo Badgley Mischka, told The New
York Times last week. "We certainly did beading and embroidery [this
season], but not as much as we normally do."
Designer Marc Bouwer told The Times that his gowns are far less
extravagant than in years past. He uses Swarovski crystals for some
designs but says, "Those days of glittering from head to toe are
pass. Now we use crystals as hints to punctuate a certain drape
along the cleavage or the back of a gown."
Speaking of bling, did you know that a band of Swarovski crystals,
made up of thousands of stones, can cost more than $200 a yard? If I
had to bet though, designers will still want thousands of dollars for
their evengingwear, Swarovskis or no.
As for accessories, they too are pared back--minimialistic yet bold.
What does this mean for you? For now, put away your thin chains and
bangles; a single bold piece, like a wide cuff bracelet, chandelier
earrings, or a strand of pearls with a prominent clip-on brooch are
this fall's hot accessories. Yellow gold is back big, so grab a
hammered gold cuff, gold dangle earrings, or a gold pin to clip onto
your strand of pearls.
And while you're preparing for the styles of the season, don't toss
your embellished stuff...it'll soon be back. (Want to know how to care
