Fashion Industry Kills Self-Esteem?

Fri Oct 06 20:09:56 EDT 2006
Meryl Streep, star of The Devil Wears Prada, a movie coming out this
Friday based on the book by the same name, blames the fashion industry
for making her daughters feel like they will never measure up.

The 52-yearl-old actress, who plays a bitchy magazine editor
reportedly based on Vogue's Anna Wintour, says, "They [my three
daughters] all think there is something dreadfully wrong with how they
look. Maybe that's a function of the human condition but I think it is
reinforced by fashion magazines. I know how inadequate they made me
feel, so I've always tried to tell them that it's what they do, not
how they look that counts. That's hard in a culture which only values
you for how you look."

Personally, I love the fashion glossies and know that, at 5'2", I'll
never be Giselle. Just like I know that when I read Coastal Living
that I'll never own beachfront property in the Hamptons. I don't want
to read about average short girls who live in regular homes in the
suburbs. Where's the excitement in that? I want the fantasy, I want to
dream. I want to pretend that I can afford and wear couture.

Weigh in:

Do fashion magazines make you feel like this?

or like this?
